Art on the Lawn

This fun, open-ended art experience for all ages will be held on the library’s front lawn (or in the meeting room if rain). Choose from a variety of art-related activities, so dress for mess! Drop in any time between 10am-1pm.

Musician Duke Otherwise: Music for Kids & Families

June 16th, 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Musician Duke Otherwise performs a concert in City Park. Duke Otherwise is a playful wordsmith, a spirited performer, a skilled guitarist, and a captivating tap-dancer. Using his distinct baritone, he sings his hilarious and imaginative songs that all ages will delight in together.

My Very Silly Monster Program with Author/Illustrator Tim Read

June 18th, 10:30 – 11:30 am

This program features fun and creative live cartoon drawings, silly stories, fun surprises, and tons of audience participation. All ages are welcome.

Meet American Pop Artist/Author Michael Albert

June 21st, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Albert will make a short presentation introducing himself & his art to the group. Plus, participants can choose 1 print to have signed by Michael to take home.

As time allows, Albert will be available for poster signings as well.

Hands-On Collage Workshop with American Pop Artist Michael Albert

June 23rd, 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Participants get to create their own collages using the same materials Albert uses to create his serious works of art.

Extreme Weather with Iowa Storm Chasing Network (ISCN)

Have you ever been curious about how storm chasers forecast, and how they stay safe while storm chasing? Local storm chaser Zach Sharpe will focus on the science behind storm chasing and everyday hazardous weather, as well as the safety messages of severe weather and how to prepare for it.

Bubble Professors Outdoor Show

June 30th, 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Absolute Science’s highly trained Bubbleologists use special string wands to produce hundreds of bubbles at this outdoor, evening event. A wonderful visual experience and fun for all bubble-fans.

Weather permitting, this show will occur outside in front of the library. Large groups/childcare centers may be accommodated. We recommend bringing your own blankets or lawn chairs and encourage bringing your own sunscreen, bug spray, and water. In the case of rain, the event will be modified and held indoors.

Zoo to You

July 12th, 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Blank Park Zoo visits for an educational Zoo to You program! Meet an Animal Ambassador in this engaging and memorable educational experience for children and adults. After this program, you’ll have the confidence to get out and explore the world around you and feel empowered to become stewards of the natural world.

Outdoor Traveling Bug Camp

July 15th, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Iowa State Insect Zoo hosts an interactive bug-hunt camp recommended for ages 8 and up. Campers will dive deep into the world of arthropods with a breakdown of classes and insect orders. They will go on a guided bug hunt in the neighborhood outside of the library, collect and identify insects and release them back into the wild. Registration required. Registration for this event closes two weeks before the event.

Please note we will be outside, rain or shine. Your child should wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, jeans, a t-shirt and bring a jacket or long-sleeved shirt and a raincoat/poncho if rain is in the forecast. Please bring a refillable bottle of water and sunscreen.

Bring Those Bugs Inside

July 15th, 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Bring Those Bugs Inside with the Iowa State University Insect Zoo! Get up close and personal with 100 species of our multi-legged friends, beetles, millipedes, walking sticks, roaches, scorpions, tarantulas and more! Learn all about why these animals are important for our environment with the help of our knowledgeable Insect Zoo staff. Ask questions about the animals on display and get a chance to touch millipedes, beetles, walking sticks, and more! Bring in your photos of bugs to be identified or even the bug itself!

Storytime

Tuesday & Wednesday mornings starting June 1st
10:30 am

We’ve got books and rhymes for a grand old time! We’ll have a fun, interactive 25 minute storytime. Tuesday storytimes will be followed by playtime or themed activities. Wednesday storytimes are outdoors. Recommended ages 2 – 5.

Every other Tuesday starting June 7th 1:30 – 3 pm

A drop-in program for caregivers and their children. We will have different stations in our community room with a variety of toys for little ones to play and build with.

Movers & Makers

Every other Wednesday starting June 8th, 1:30 – 3:00 pm

Move a little, make a little, and create memories. Each installment in the series will include read-alouds and activities with the family, so make sure you plan accordingly! We’ll wrap up each session with a thematic craft.

Registration preferred. Recommended ages 7 – 11.

CAMP Scribbles

Every other Wednesday starting June 15th

A series of four activity-driven camp sessions focused on different themes. We will have a Dominoes Camp, a Coding Basics Camp with the Robo Warriors, a Theatre Camp, and a Naturalist Camp with the Warren County Conservation Board.

Recommended ages 7 – 11.

Friday Movie Screening

Most Fridays at 1:30 pm

The library will screen a family-friendly movie (rated PG or G) and provide popcorn and other light snacks to enhance your viewing experience.

Stuffie Camp

June 3rd, 4:00 – 6:00 pm

To kick off this summer’s Read Beyond the Beaten Path, we’re hosting a Stuffie Camp! Bring your (second) favorite stuffed animal to camp over at the library. Drop-off starts at 4:00pm and goes until 6:00pm. There will be an evening storytime and activities, and a special camp session just for the stuffed animals when the doors close! Your stuffed animal friends will be available for pick-up on Saturday morning at 10:30 am, and there will be a light breakfast and a slideshow of their camp night!

Come Draw with Me – Live Drawing Program with Children’s Book Author/Illustrator Tim Read

June 18th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Illustrator/author Tim Read teaches children ages 8 and up how to draw. Kids will take part in fun and creative drawing exercises designed to spark their imagination and inspire them to think outside the box. All supplies are furnished for this free program.

Copies of Tim’s “Silly Monster” books will be available for purchase and autographing.

Sensory Access Hour

June 25th & July 23rd, 9:00 – 10:00 am

The library will open its doors an hour early with reduced environmental distractions and sensory-friendly program opportunities once a month on Saturday. The library will provide quiet browsing and inclusive programming for individuals of all ages with special sensory needs and their families or care-givers.

Baby Bootcamp

June 27th & July 25th, 8:30 – 10:00 am

New parents are encouraged to join our regularly-scheduled Geri-Fit ® with their little one for a fitness-focused walk and social time. Afterwards, the library will wrap up the morning with an infant storytime. Morning beverages will be provided.
